Tell the kids that you are going to have a pajama day. Have everyone stay in their sleepwear all day long. Have breakfast together and then spend a few hours playing board games. In the afternoon, pop some popcorn and watch a movie or two. Then in the evening, get out the sleeping bags and put them down in your living room. Turn out the lights and tell stories and have a family camp out right in your own home! You could even makes’ mores in the oven to add a camping touch to your evening.

Help your children redecorate their bedroom. If cabin fever has set in, put the kids in the car and head to your local retail or home improvement store. You remember the old computer floppy disks? They were the type of storage media we used to have until pen drives and CDs were invented. Now no computer programmer or user will need them. Their use has long been replaced by other versatile and high capacity mimeo devices. So we are going to turn these obsolete objects into something useful - drink coasters.

Let's see how we shall go about it. Using the film like sheets in the floppy, you will be able to make the coasters. The floppy disk film is so thin and easily warps, we will need to use felt or some other material to reinforce it so it becomes more durable for use as beverage coasters. We want to use our coasters for a long time. Again, the floppy film is too smooth so the felt will increase the frictional property and make it stable on tables, desks or coffee tables.

You will need a floppy disk, a sticker and scissors for the beverage coasters. Just three things.

The procedure is equally simple.

Rip the floppy disc apart. You can do this by placing you thumb at the upper part of the disks and gently pulling them apart. You will then get the thin film that lay inside the disks.

The next thing to do to get our coasters is to cut out felt to the shape of the thin film and use adhesive (preferably glue) to affix it to the film. Leave it to dry.

You now have your nice beverage coasters. You will personally admire your ingenuity of using obsolete material to generate something useful for your home or office.

Get a solid Model Train Table:  

It is a big improvement to have an good surface for your layout right from the start. You look proficient with your mits so you could probably craft the surface yourself.  If you do, you could want to think about the drawback of designing a model train display area that is connected to the structure of your dwelling.  If possible we should have a stand alone display area that we can haul as when necessary.  If you come to buy a table there is an outstanding domino style model table. Hobby tables can be attached however you please to realize almost any shape you can dream up. These tables also uncannily meld a strong, lightweight and easily movable construction.  This third feature is particularly useful for model train enthusiasts who like to go to model train conventions. Keep your HO model train layout to the basics:  

Don’t reach to do too much with such a basic area. Choose between three simple configurations. They’re all about the same in when it comes to benefits and drawbacks. If you like crafting model structures the basic donut shape leaves you the most possibilities. The focus will rest largely on the craft and artwork involved in your accessories.  A figure 8 creates four distinct zones for your space but they will be much smaller. Concentric circles tends to be the golden mean between the first two layouts. You could place a round house at the center and pretend this is a rail yard. Weathering the trains and detailing the roundhouse at the center can really bring this setup together. These are all good first time set ups and none of them shut out any future layout possibilities.  The oval and concentric circles are particularly well suited to later addition.

Use the angle of display to make a larger sense of space:

The corner of your layout forms an apex to a triangular viewpoint that can really maximize the appearance of depth if used correctly.  This effect can be further maximized by decaling cardboard or plywood walls extending from the back corner of your display surface with fading mountain ranges and a smattering of clouds.

Finally, use accessories like buildings and uneven topography to create a greater sense of contrast:  

Another way we can trick the viewer into believing that our display is larger is to add accessories like tiny trees and little hills or piles of pebbles so that the train is at times blocked from sight.  Especially useful to this end is to have a very large building structure on mountain surface next to the train tracks so that when the train goes by the sense of contrast will make the viewer believe they are actually looking on a distant landscape rather than just a model train layout.

Don’t think of this first step as the final stage of your model train experience but just as the first step in the journey. It won’t be long before you develop the skills to create really impressive model train displays.

Here’s a blast from the past, these s gauge locomotives are “American Flyers”:  

This brand of locomotives has been enshrined in the pantheon of model trains.  Nostalgia explains a lot.  American Flyer’s s gauge locomotives had their best days right after WWII when the baby boomers were starting to sprout up.  American Flyer played Spartacus to Lionel’s Roman Empire and although their challenge failed it is not surprising that model trainers now stand up and yell “I am American Flyer” in revolt. S scale is an “inbetween” gauge, way larger than HO but smaller than Lionel’s O.  S scale is one 64^th the size of a real train whereas Lionel’s O scale is one 48^th the size.   These are still pretty substantial locomotives but not so much so that you would have to have them only outside. You can still really get involved with detailing with these large model trains.

S gauge is not a standard gauge:  

Because American Flyer in effect created s scale and then went out of business shortly after, you don’t run across it much.  A.C. Gilbert, who ran American Flyer at the time, produced this gauge as an attempt to introduce a line of locomotives that would challenge Lionel by making high quality locomotives that weren’t interchangeable with Lionel locomotives. American Flyer trains from the 50’s only fit s gauge and wouldn’t run on Lionel’s O.   Because of the law of supply and demand, American Flyers brief life span has inflated the demand for their parts and sets.   The nature of this devotion has just made the locomotives that much more valuable.

Lionel LLC has broadcast their intention to bring out new “vintage” s gauge locomotives:  

American Flyer’s nemesis Lionel bought them out in the 60’s and is now looking to reinvigorate both brands by releasing the vintage 1950’s models that are so loved by collectors.  The fantastic success of these releases has driven Lionel to promise to reproduce the s scale locomotives that committed fans are so in love with.  It might not be long before we have to make space for s scale as yet another common scale in the toy training world.

So if you want to get in front of this wave, now’s the time.  This is when the early adopters wade in and check things out.  Get one of these flap jacks while they’re still hot. It’s like the coffee house craze of the early 90s.  And you said no one would ever cough out more just for some coffee.
